A genetic link to premature ejaculation
Premature ejaculation is an embarrassing condition that affects as many as one-third of worldwide male population
at some time in their lives. A new study reveals that it might be a genetic disorder.

Researchers from Turku University, Finland, interviewed more than three thousand men about the first time they had sex.
All pairs of male twins and their older or younger brothers have been also interviewed by the team members.
Many participants involved in the study reported that they had suffered from erectile dysfunction and
premature ejaculation at their first sexual encounter. These very common male problems are often linked to external
factors, such as intoxication or nervousness due to peer pressure. On one hand, this new research confirms that such
factors do cause erectile dysfunction. On the other hand,
premature ejaculation appears to be strongly associated to genetic factors, and is not just a psychological condition.
In an earlier study that interviewed a cohort of two hundred men, researchers in The Netherlands linked
premature ejaculation to a gene for serotonin regulation. The new data coming from Finland show independently
a genetic link to premature ejaculation in a much larger group, and rule out environmental factors.
Dr. David Goldmeier, Faculty of 1000 Medicine member, notes that the increasing evidence for a genetic cause of
premature ejaculation opens the way for the development of new drug treatments - something with many men may
control premature ejaculation. However, according to both Goldmeier and reviewer Taylor Segraves the drug therapy
is not the only solution.
They strongly think psychotherapy and
lasting longer sexual techniques will continue to be a valuable and useful form of
premature ejaculation treatment - even in male with a genetic cause.
The study by Pekka Santtila and his team was published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy in March 2009.
