Antidepressants and Dapoxetine as a treatment for premature ejaculation
As premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common problem in male population, the treatment of this condition
received an increasing attention in recent years.
Psychopharmacotherapy for premature ejaculation started over 40 years ago when scientist claimed the delay
of ejaculation as a side-effect of antidepressants. Since then, successful treatment of premature ejaculation
using different psychotherapeutic agents (antidepressants) have been considered.
In many trials, drugs already licensed for depression treatment were evaluated in premature ejaculation.
Researches have been shown that, when taken daily, fluoxetine, clomipramine, paroxetine and sertraline
significantly delay the premature ejaculatory process. Using this kind of daily treatment with antidepressants,
the delay of ejaculation generally occurs within 5-10 days or earlier.
Dapoxetine is a drug from selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) category. Trial observations
claim that 30 to 60 mg of dapoxetine drug taken 4 hours before estimated sexual intercourse are effective.
The approval of Dapoxetine from the FDA requires more evaluation.
